What I’ve Secretly Been Working On

We’re all familiar with water, right?  You know, H20?  Well in light of all the Web 2.0 “stuff” out there today, I’ve been asked to be part of a team working on a new version.

As you may or may not know, our current stable release is H21.  It is a maintenance release, with a few bug fixes.  But we’re we’re really proud of is our new Beta for version H30.  It’s a limited beta, so you have to be invited by someone who is already a beta particpant, but don’t ask me for an invitation.  I was only given a few and I’ve already given them out.

So, besides the new spelling, you might be wondering what’s new in Watr H3.0.  Well, here’s a short list:

  • Rewritten from the ground up using Ruby on Rails and AJAX
  • A public REST API*
  • A public SOAP API*
  • Even more Hydrogen than before!
  • Baked in tag support, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase “tag cloud
  • RSS/Atom feeds
  • User-generated content
  • and more!

* = Available in a future release

This is all very exciting, as you can imagine.  Due to the “limited beta” status, I’ve said about all I can say about this, but keep your eyes open for our public beta in the near future.

Google Really *IS* Evil

Regardless of what you’ve heard or read, Google is evil. Here is proof.

Site Stats

Wow.  I just checked my site stats, which I normally get around to about once a month.  I’m surprised to see that I’ve had three days with over 5,000 hits in the last 7 days, one of them being nearly 7,000 hits.  I know those numbers aren’t huge, but I’m happy to see them given my typical volume and content of posts.  Normally, I average around 3,000 hits/day on this site, so I was a little suprised to see those numbers given that I haven’t posted much recently until today.

Now that I’ve thought about it, though, it makes sense for two reasons:

  1. Deeper in .NET was this weekend, and a good number of referrals are related to that.
  2. I just took down my other site, www.scottisaacs.com, and forwarded all of that traffic here.

Now if I could just find a way to turn 5,000 hits into 50,000 hits…. and then find a way to turn each hit into $10….

Domain Names For Sale

I used to have quite a collection of domain names.  At one point, I had nearly thirty.  It was an addiction, and I needed help.  Now I’m a recovering domain-name-aholic, letting unnecessary registrations lapse as the expiration date approaches.  I’m currently down to 17.  (The road to recovery is long and lonely.)

Well, I have three that I am planning to “let go” very soon, putting them into an indefinite “domain name purgatory” until my registrar decides to release them back into the wild.  If you’re interested in any of these domains, let me know.  I don’t need to get rich from this, but I do want to make sure they make it to a good home.  [;)]

Here are the names I am currently planning to let lapse:

  • hypothesize.org
  • resemblance.org
  • wordforsale.com

Please help me keep from falling back into my old addictions.  I am still weak, and may falter at any time.  With your help, I can overcome this hurdle.

Haiku

Most people know what a haiku is, right?  A three line poem, with 5 syllables on the first line, 7 on the second and 5 more on the third, adding to 17.

Well, I was browsing ThinkGeek and saw this one.  (Keep refreshing and you’ll eventually see it.)

Writing a poem
In seventeen syllables
Is very diffi

I thought it was hilarious, but then I haven’t been sleeping much the last few days.

Pink OR Blue OR (Yellow AND Green)

OK, I can finally start telling people what I’ve been keeping secret.

Kelly and I are going to have a baby!!!

A few weeks ago, we had our first ultrasound.  That was amazing!  The baby was less than 3/4″ long at the time, but its heart was already beating (I could see it beating 3 times per second, but we couldn’t hear it), and it was already moving around.  Apparently it sleeps for about 23 hours a day (lucky!), but it must have got disturbed during the ultrasound because it was in a different position at the end than it was at the beginning.

That was probably the coolest thing I have ever seen.  I can’t imagine how this could get any cooler, but if I listen to my friends who already have kids, it must get way better.  I can’t wait to be overwhelmed when the baby is born in September!

We’re almost 12 weeks, so we won’t know for another couple months if we should be decorating the baby’s room in our new house with pink or blue.  The new house, by the way, is also due in September.

I’m so excited….

I Make the Web Suck Less

According to optionsScalper, I make the web “suck less” with some things I posted earlier this month here and here.

Just doing my job, ma’am.  Just doing my job.  😉

I’m Feeling Blue Tonight

Tonight, Kelly and I are going to Chicago to see the Blue Man Group.  We’re going to the 10PM show, so we’re staying the night (at a nice 4 star joint thanks to Priceline).

Her birthday was yesterday and this was part of her present.  I think I might enjoy it as much as her, though!
